You know how everyone on the internet preaches that one should start investing as early as possible to take advantage of compounding? Well… I did that but instead of buying traditional stocks, I bought cryptocurrencies!
Like buying stocks, when you want to buy any cryptocurrency, you need to figure determine which exchange (you can think of exchanges similar to that of stock exchanges) sells these tokens. Having been in the space for a few months, I realised that I was spending a lot of time on this process because it is entirely manual and I was doing it multiple times a day so I tried to automated it.
I was not entirely sure what language to use but a friend recommended the PythonTelegramBot library so I decided to relearn python for this project. As I started working on the bot, I encountered with another problem - the dominant source of cryptocurrency related information (coinmarketcap) had APIs but it did not have what I was looking for so I opted for an alternative approach - to scrap their UI for this information with the help of BeautifulSoup.
It worked for a while but because CMC kept changing their frontend code structure, it constantly broke the bot. It got to a point where almost every upgrade broke the bot and I was really annoyed so after a few months of usage (and declining interests in purchasing cryptocurrencies), I decided that I will no longer maintain the bot. The repo is currently archived but you can fork the repo if you want to use it. Do note that it is very unlikely to work out of the box. You probably also want to first check if newer APIs have been introduced to CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko!
